Alexei Navalny received today in Ascona the “European Prize for Political Culture” of the Hans Ringier Foundation. Representing her husband, who is imprisoned in Russia, Yulia Navalnaya accepted the award in Ascona. “Alexei Navalny stands for the power of freedom, democracy and the rule of law. Europe can only bow before his indomitable spirit – in gratitude and admiration,” commented President of the Hans Ringier Foundation Frank A. Meyer on the choice of this year’s laureate.
Joachim Gauck, former German President, paid tribute to the prize winner in his laudation: “With its European Prize, the Hans Ringier Foundation is paying tribute this year to Alexei Navalny, a man who has disappeared behind prison walls for denouncing injustice, corruption and war. With his extraordinary courage, he stands up to those who wanted to murder him and now want to break him with brutal, inhumane prison conditions. Because he is silenced in his homeland, he needs the solidarity and support of those who can speak freely. We Europeans not only admire his attitude and courage, but he also allows us to believe that there is another Russia, a Russia beyond the criminal Putin system.”
The award ceremony took place during the traditional “Dîner Républicain”, which is held annually at the invitation of Frank A. Meyer at the hotel “Castello del Sole” in Ascona.
