- The collaboration with OpenAI marks the next chapter in Ringier’s AI transformation.
- Five key focus areas: Employee enablement, software development, marketplaces, editorial teams, and corporate functions.
- Group-wide enablement: Gradual rollout of ChatGPT Enterprise across the Ringier Group, supported by OpenAI and the joint development of specific use cases.
- No content licensing: The agreement governs the use of OpenAI products within the company. Ringier’s content is not part of the agreement.
Ringier and OpenAI are launching a collaboration. The agreement is another significant step in Ringier’s transformation into a data- and AI-driven corporate group. As one of Europe’s leading media and marketplace companies, Ringier aims to actively shape innovation and lead the way in using OpenAI tools.
Through this collaboration, Ringier secures long-term, secure, and cost-effective access to OpenAI’s language models and tools.
The initiative fits into the group’s existing technology ecosystem: OpenAI will act as an accelerator for AI applications and workflows, while Google Workspace & Gemini will provide the foundation for daily collaboration, and Palantir will serve as the intelligent data operating system.
Data remains in Europe
Usage is managed through an enterprise agreement with data storage in Europe. Ringier’s Data Protection Team has reviewed and approved the products being used. They are embedded in the group’s AI guidelines. For editorial teams, the following applies: research, classification, and publication remain the responsibility of the journalists. AI supports individual work steps; it does not make editorial decisions.
Decentralized autonomy through an enterprise agreement
The collaboration is based on a group-wide enterprise agreement that gives Ringier’s individual business units – Media, Sports Media, Marketplaces, and Corporate Functions – full autonomy. They will decide independently where and how OpenAI’s products and services can create the greatest value for their specific needs.
Five pillars for measurable value
The collaboration focuses on five strategic priorities that will be implemented group-wide:
- Needs-based deployment of ChatGPT Enterprise, accompanied by training programs to enhance AI competence and productivity.
- Integration of OpenAI development tools and autonomous agents into the daily practices of IT teams to accelerate development cycles.
- Use of the OpenAI interface for smarter searches, dialogue-oriented user guidance, and automated evaluations on Ringier’s digital marketplace platforms.
- Development and testing of new workflows, including for AI-assisted research, content structuring, and support in cross-referencing sources.
- Use of AI in central functions such as Finance, HR, Legal, and Communications to automate routine tasks, accelerate analyses, and improve service quality.
Marc Walder, CEO of Ringier AG: “Artificial intelligence is fundamentally changing the media industry. The multi-year collaboration with OpenAI is another step toward actively shaping this transformation. Together with OpenAI, we want to adapt our workflows, create new digital products, and deliver even better experiences for our users. One principle remains unchanged: technology supports people. It does not replace journalistic responsibility and human judgment.”
Christoph Winter, Enterprise Lead for DACH at OpenAI: “Ringier demonstrates how a leading media company can responsibly integrate AI into its daily work. With ChatGPT Enterprise, employees get a powerful tool that helps them develop ideas faster, leverage knowledge better, and focus on the work where human judgment and creativity are crucial. We look forward to supporting Ringier on this journey.”
