INSIDE-OUT: Our Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy

The Ringier CSR strategy forms the basis for the involvement of Ringier in the area of corporate social responsibility. It is oriented to the relevant axes of sustainability which are economy, environment and society. The starting point for the CSR strategy is the Ringier CSR Report 2008, which was published last November.

Responsibility begins at home, and consequently Ringier adheres to the principle "INSIDE-OUT", i.e., internal before external, in sustainability. External commitments are only convincing when they are reflected in the culture and behavior within a company. As a consequence, the sustainability of a company must grow from the inside-out, which is the reason why Ringier also starts with its commitments internally. For example, before campaigns are initiated to save the rain forest, employees should first save paper in daily work and consequently reduce consumption of the resource of wood. The project «Paperless Administration» is targeting precisely this goal. Another example: Ringier has decided against compensating for CO2 emissions and is instead taking measures to reduce them.

Ringier has set the goal of reducing the specific energy consumption of printing works by three percent and the quantity of hazardous waste by 10 percent by the year 2010. In addition, the resource of wood is to be protected by an increase in the share of recycling fibers in offset and gravure papers to 15 percent, and sustainable forest use is to be promoted by increased use of paper in line with the FSC or PEFC standard. Ringier also wants to be a good and reliable employer as well as an active member of society in the future.

Based on this strategy, an action plan is being drawn up to develop corporate social responsibility at Ringier further.
